Towing

When a ship attempts to move another ship, whether the towed ship wants it to or not, the towing rules apply. If the total tonnage of both ships is higher than the maximum tonnage the helm type can move, the ships will not move. A tradesman, a 25 ton ship, outfitted with a minor helm cannot tow a 45 ton squid ship as the maximum tonnage for a minor helm is 50 tons and the combined tonnage of the tradesman and the squid ship is 65 tons. That same tradesman could tow another tradesman, as their combined tonnage is 50 tons, the max for a minor helm.

The SR of the combined ships is calculated the same as for a single ship, from spell caster level and helm type. The MC of the combined ships is F.

If the ship to be towed has a helm that can move the combined tonnage of the joined ships, and it does not wish to be towed (such as an enemy ship that has been grappled), the ship with the highest SR wins. In this case the more powerful helm, based on SR, overcomes the less powerful and moves the ships as if they are one ship with an MC of F.
